Alameda's future will be shaped by all of us. Let's build it together.
Alameda is the place I proudly call home, and I believe we have an opportunity to thoughtfully plan for its future. It will take all of us working together to find creative solutions and move forward on the priorities that matter most. We need to support our local businesses, invest in essential infrastructure, and realize the full potential of Alameda Point.
Over the years, I've coached Alameda Little League and Alameda Youth Basketball teams, volunteered with the Alameda Warming Shelter and Meals on Wheels, and pitched in on parent workdays at the beloved Kiddie Kampus Cooperative Preschool. Recently, I served four years on the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District Board, helping promote public health and environmental protection initiatives. I have a background in energy and environmental policy, and following graduate school I joined a clean tech start-up where I worked to raise awareness about climate change and advocate for increased sustainability measures.
It was during my time as a Coro Fellow in Public Affairs that I learned the importance of working with everyone in our community in order to implement effective and meaningful policies. Real progress comes from working with all of our neighbors. That's why I believe Alameda is Better Together. Our greatest strength has always been the people who show up, support one another, and work together to make our community stronger.
My wife, Ali, and I both grew up in the East Bay. In 2014 we made Alameda our home and since then, we've made core memories here with our two boys and our pup, June. Our lives unfold here every day, in our neighborhoods, schools, parks, local businesses, and community events, and every person adds something unique to the fabric of this Island. I'm excited for the opportunity to work alongside each of you.
What I'll focus on
Some of the best moments in Alameda happen in our business districts, like coffee after school drop-off, grabbing flowers from your favorite florist on Webster, enjoying a beer at Alameda Point, or meeting an old friend on Park Street for dinner. These are the places we gather and build community. They're also a draw for the whole region, as thousands of folks come to Alameda for our street festivals, the Antiques Faire, and so much more. Our districts are economic engines, creating jobs for our neighbors and revenue that keeps the city running. That's why it's critical that we keep investing in our local businesses and champion how they contribute.
Alameda Point is a once-in-a-generation opportunity! We need to act thoughtfully and with real urgency. I'll collaborate with City staff and community stakeholders to find a path forward for housing development, attracting new businesses, and making infrastructure improvements so that Alameda Point can reach its full potential.
One of the reasons our family fell in love with Alameda was how easy it is to walk and bike the Island. In recent years, there have been too many accidents and stories about pedestrian near-misses with vehicles. The city has made real progress on safer streets, building out more than 60 miles of bike lanes across the Island, and I'm very thankful for the work they have done.
But we're not done. Too many drivers still move too fast through our neighborhoods, and too many intersections still feel unsafe to cross. We need to keep investing in the infrastructure that protects walkers and bikers, while remembering that many of us still rely on our cars to access much of what Alameda offers. A balanced transportation infrastructure plan means all of us can get around the Island safely and efficiently.
Alameda wasn't always an island. We became one in 1902, when the Tidal Canal was cut to separate us from Oakland. Over the years, our city has improved because of the investments we've made in our infrastructure. However, as we plan for the future we need to continue to make investments to keep our Island from deteriorating. Our roads, levees, storm drains, and the structures our emergency services depend on need improvements. We can't keep patching eroding infrastructure and hoping it holds.
Investing now costs far less than waiting. It'll take real money, so we have to be creative about how we pay for it. I want to grow old in Alameda. I'm guessing you do too. Let's make it a place worth calling home for generations to come.
My commitment to Alameda
These are the values I bring to every decision, every conversation, and every vote.
I will listen to everyone, even when we disagree. Good leadership starts with making sure people feel heard. Every voice matters, and every neighbor deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
I will be honest and transparent, even when it's uncomfortable. I know it will be difficult, but you deserve a City Council who does the right thing.
I'll prioritize pragmatism over ideology. What matters is whether something actually improves people's lives, not whether it fits a political narrative. I'll measure success by real outcomes.
Much of what we discuss over the coming months of the campaign will be about the future of Alameda. Though it's absolutely critical that we recognize and thank the nonprofits and community organizations across the Island who are already working tirelessly to educate our children, feed and provide housing for our families, give us hope when we face challenges, and who we share some of life's most memorable moments with. These organizations and their committed volunteers are impacting our lives and the lives of our neighbors each and every day.
